The Housing sub group within the Hartlepool Poverty Truth Commission was formed to address housing issues directly impacting those with lived experience of poverty in our community.
Since starting, we’ve focused on choosing and understanding key concerns, such as the need for safe, well-maintained homes and the barriers people face in accessing affordable housing options. Through collaboration between our community commissioners and civic and business leaders, our group has started shaping a vision and identifying specific next steps.
Here, we’ll keep you updated on our ongoing work and efforts to push for changes that improve housing quality and stability across Hartlepool.
Initially, we mapped out the current housing issues in Hartlepool to get a clear picture of where we stand, drawing on up-to-date statistics and local insights. This process helped us identify key challenges, as well as the wider impact these issues have on residents’ well-being. This groundwork forms part of our “Where We Are and Where We Need to Be” document, which outlines both our current position (2024) and our vision for a future where everyone in Hartlepool has access to safe and affordable housing
First Sub group Meeting
The first Housing sub-group meeting was held on the 8th of October at the Salaam Centre in Hartlepool, where our HPTC commissioners met alongside other local stakeholders who had an interest in this area to think about what we already know about housing, what help or solutions are available, what opportunities we have and our next actions.
“We really appreciate that housing is a strategic priority for our local authority and essentially that’s where the responsibility lies, it’s a very broad area of work and we hope this sub-group group can add value to the local authorities responsibility to deliver on it’s housing priorities.” Tracey Herrington, Thrive Teesside
This group will from the Community Housing Partnership within Hartlepool and we are looking forward to see this further develop and inviting all housing providers to the table.
Our next Housing meeting will be held on the 26th of November with more updates to follow.
